Pruning done right

Tree pruning vs tree lopping — and why it matters.

Lopping might look cheaper, but it can leave your tree weaker, uglier and more dangerous within a few years. Here’s the difference — and why True Roots prunes to Australian Standards.

Tree lopping is indiscriminate cutting — topping a tree or hacking limbs back to stubs. It triggers weak, fast regrowth, opens the tree up to decay and disease, and often makes it more hazardous over time, not less.

Proper pruning, done to Australian Standard AS 4373, removes the right branches at the right points to keep your tree healthy, safe, balanced and structurally sound. As AQF Level 5 arborists we prune for the long-term health of the tree and the safety of your property — whether it’s crown thinning, deadwooding, clearance or shaping. See our tree pruning service.

Pruning questions

Good to know.

Is tree lopping ever okay?

Rarely. In an emergency a tree might be cut back hard to make it safe, but as ongoing practice lopping damages trees. Proper pruning is almost always the better choice.

Will pruning hurt my tree?

Not when it’s done correctly. Pruning to AS 4373 actually improves a tree’s health, structure and safety. Over-pruning or lopping is what causes harm.

Do I need council approval to prune a tree?

Minor pruning is often exempt, but significant pruning of a protected tree can need approval. We check your council’s rules first — see our arborist reports.

When is the best time to prune in Sydney?

It depends on the species and the goal. We’ll advise the right timing so the tree responds well.

How much does tree pruning cost?

It depends on the tree’s size, access and the work needed. We assess it and give you a clear, fixed quote up front.
