Salt, sand and strata: what Cronulla trees deal with
Salt wind off Bate Bay, sandy soil that holds nothing, and blocks that have been cut into units and townhouses for fifty years. That combination gives Cronulla a particular set of tree problems: Norfolk Island Pines and Coral Trees that have got too big for the space they were given, Cocos and Bangalow palms dropping fronds and seed onto cars, Lilly Pilly and Murraya hedges pushed hard against boundaries, and root systems chasing water into drains and pool shells.
A lot of our Cronulla work is for strata — the unit blocks along the Kingsway, Gerrale Street and the streets back toward Woolooware. Committees want a written scope, a fixed price, SWMS and certificates of currency before the day. We supply all of that as standard, and we have done repeat rounds of pruning and removals on the same complexes, which tells you the paperwork and the work were both right.
The trees themselves are worked from ropes and a compact chipper, because there is rarely room for a truck in a Cronulla driveway. Everything is lowered, carried and chipped at the front, and the car park is swept before we leave.

Sutherland Shire Council rules and access in Cronulla
Council: Sutherland Shire Council. A tree is protected once its trunk is 100 mm across measured 500 mm above the ground. Exempt trees include Camphor Laurel, Weeping Fig, Rubber Tree, Italian Cypress, most Pinus and Acacia species and edible fruit trees; dead trees are generally exempt unless they hold hollows; storm-broken limbs and roofline clearance pruning to AS 4373 are exempt. The Shire will normally approve removal of a tree within 3 m of a house or pool, but you still lodge an application, and it takes up to 28 business days. Cocos palms are not on the exempt list here, so check before you cut.
Access: Unit blocks mean car parks, basement ramps and shared driveways. We work from ropes, drop onto mats and carry out through the front, and we schedule around residents’ cars.
Soil and roots: Sand drains fast, so roots go long and shallow looking for water — into pool surrounds, paving and stormwater. Root barriers and root pruning under arborist supervision are often the better answer to removing a tree the council will not approve. See root barriers.

Cronulla tree questions
Can I remove a Cocos palm in Cronulla without council approval?
Not automatically — unlike Georges River, Sutherland Shire does not list Cocos palms as exempt. If the trunk is over 100 mm you lodge an application; palms are usually approved quickly. We check and lodge for you.
Do you work with strata managers?
Constantly. We provide a written scope per tree, a fixed price, SWMS, $20M public liability and workers comp certificates, and photos of the finished work for the committee.
What about the Norfolk pine over our units?
Norfolk Island Pines are protected and the Shire is reluctant to approve removal of healthy ones. Usually the answer is a deadwood and clearance program every couple of years; if it is genuinely hazardous we document it properly and lodge.
