Big trees, palms and pools on Caringbah blocks
Caringbah is different from Cronulla two kilometres away. The blocks are wider, the houses were built with yards, and the 1960s owners planted for shade: Sydney Blue Gums, Spotted Gums, Liquidambars, Jacarandas and a great many Cocos palms. Then came the pools, the granny flats and the knock-down rebuilds, and the trees ended up in the way — roots under the pool shell, canopy over the new roof, Liquidambar spikes in the filter.
The bulk of our Caringbah work is that conflict: taking down or reducing a tree that has outgrown its spot without wrecking what is under it. Where the tree can be kept we say so and prune it to AS 4373; where it has to go we dismantle it in sections, grind the stump and treat the roots so the area can be rebuilt. Down toward Lilli Pilli and Dolans Bay the ground drops to Port Hacking and the jobs become rigging jobs on steep waterfront blocks.
Sutherland Shire Council protects anything over 100 mm trunk diameter, and the Shire wants a proper reason for removing a healthy gum. We check whether a permit is needed and point you to an independent consulting arborist when Council wants a report; we also tell you honestly when a removal is unlikely to be approved so you do not pay for a report that will fail.

Sutherland Shire Council rules for Caringbah trees
Council: Sutherland Shire Council. Protected from a 100 mm trunk at 500 mm above ground. Exempt: Camphor Laurel, Weeping Fig, Rubber Tree, Italian Cypress, most pines and wattles, fruit trees; dead trees without hollows; storm-broken limbs; roofline clearance to the nearest branch collar. A tree within 3 m of the house or pool will normally be approved for removal, but the application still goes in and can take up to 28 business days, so do not leave it until the week before the pool contractor arrives.
Access: Most Caringbah blocks take our compact loader down the side, which keeps the price down and the job to a day. Caringbah South and Lilli Pilli waterfront blocks are steeper and are rigged by hand.
Species notes: Liquidambars and Jacarandas here are at the age where limbs fail in a southerly; deadwooding every few years is cheaper than a roof. Spotted Gums and Blue Gums are protected and healthy ones rarely get removal approval — plan around them.

Caringbah tree questions
The tree is right next to the pool. Will council let me remove it?
If it is within 3 m of the pool, Sutherland Shire will normally approve it — but you still need to lodge, and it can take four weeks. Further away, the Shire wants evidence: roots damaging the shell, structural defects, or a proper impact assessment for the DA.
Can you remove the tree without emptying the pool?
Yes. We rig every section away from the water, cover the pool, and do not need the pool drained. The coping and fence are protected with mats.
Do you do the new lawn or garden after?
Yes — stump ground, hole backfilled and compacted, turf or planting done by the same crew. See landscape construction.
