Over the Como bridge from Oatley and we are there in ten minutes, which is why Como, Como West and Bonnet Bay get a lot of our same-day site visits. The suburb sits on a ridge between two rivers, so nearly every block has a slope, and the trees on those slopes are the ones the subdivision left: Sydney Red Gums, Blackbutts, Scribbly Gums and Turpentines, often leaning out over a lower neighbour or the water.
Removals here are sectional rigging jobs almost without exception. A climber dismantles from the top, each section is lowered on a line to a drop zone we have cleared, and timber is cut small enough to carry up to the street or chipped where it lands. We use a crane on the ridge streets when one can reach; on the river side it is ropes. Stumps are ground well below turf level so you can plant or lay lawn straight over.
Sutherland Shire Council protects the lot, and the Shire is careful with foreshore trees. Council wants reports from an independent consulting arborist, and we are upfront when a healthy gum is not going to be approved.

Sutherland Shire Council rules and steep blocks
Council: Sutherland Shire Council — 100 mm trunk at 500 mm above ground triggers protection; exempt species include Camphor Laurel, Weeping Fig, Rubber Tree, Italian Cypress, pines, wattles and fruit trees; dead trees without hollows exempt; storm-broken limbs and roofline clearance pruning exempt; within 3 m of the house or pool normally approved on application; up to 28 business days. Trees on the river frontages may also sit under foreshore controls.
Terrain: Steep, with sandstone benches. Machinery rarely gets past the front yard; everything is rigged and carried. That is reflected in the price, and we say so.
Bushfire: Bonnet Bay and parts of Como West border bushland reserve and are bushfire-prone. The RFS 10/50 rule may allow clearing within 10 m of the house without council approval; check the RFS tool. See the 10/50 rule.

Como tree questions
The tree leans over the neighbour below us. Is that our problem?
Legally the tree belongs to whoever’s land the trunk is on. Practically, we rig it so nothing lands on their side and we speak to them before the day. Overhanging branches are covered in our guide to neighbour tree rights in NSW.
How do you get timber up a steep Como block?
Cut to carrying length and walked up, or chipped at the bottom and the chip left as mulch if you want it. On the ridge streets a crane lifts straight to the truck.
Can I lay turf over the ground stump straight away?
Yes. We grind 200–300 mm below grade, remove the grindings if you prefer, backfill with soil and compact it. Turf can go on the same day.
