Tree planting Sydney

The right tree, in the right hole, by the people who will be asked about it later.

We supply and plant advanced trees — 75 to 400 litre stock — for homeowners replacing a tree the council made them replace, for builders closing out a consent condition, and for anyone who wants shade in five years rather than twenty. The species is chosen by a Level 5 arborist, the stock is inspected against AS 2303, and the planting is done so the tree is still standing, and still growing, when the council or the certifier comes to look.

Most trees that die in Sydney gardens die in the first two summers, and they die because of the planting, not the tree: a root ball left girdled, a hole dug in clay with no drainage, mulch piled against the trunk, stakes left on until they strangle it. We plant trees the way an arborist plants them because we are the ones called back to remove them when they fail.

Because we remove trees for a living, we also know which species will still be a good idea in twenty years on your block — and which ones will be lifting the driveway, dropping limbs on the carport or growing into the powerlines. That judgement is the part a nursery cannot sell you.

What we plant

Supply, plant, stake, mulch, certify.

Advanced trees 75–400 L

Container-grown stock from wholesale nurseries, inspected on delivery against AS 2303 Tree Stock for Landscape Use: balanced crown, sound trunk taper, no circling roots. Rejected stock goes back on the truck.

Species selection by an arborist

Matched to the soil, the aspect, the space above and below ground and what you want the tree to do — shade, screening, a council condition or a feature. Natives where they suit: Blueberry Ash, Tuckeroo, Water Gum, Lilly Pilly, Ivory Curl, Brush Box.

Council replacement planting

When your removal consent says “plant a replacement tree”, we supply a tree that meets the condition, plant it to the council’s specification and give you the documentation to close the condition out.

Builders and consent conditions

Landscape plan planting for new builds, granny flats and duplexes: the trees on the plan, at the sizes on the plan, with a completion letter for the occupation certificate.

Planting done properly

Hole two to three times the width of the root ball and no deeper, premium mix blended with site soil, drainage where clay demands it, planter ring or edging where the design calls for it, stakes and ties that come off after the first season, mulch kept off the trunk.

After-planting care

Watering instructions for the first two summers, a formative prune when the tree is ready, and a Level 5 arborist on the phone if the tree looks unhappy. We planted it; we want it to live as much as you do.

A recent planting, start to finish

One advanced tree, planted to close a City of Sydney consent condition.

The consent called for one medium tree in the rear yard: at least 10 m tall at maturity with a 6 m canopy, supplied in a 75 L container or larger at 2 m height, to AS 2303, planted by a qualified arborist, and replaced if it failed inside two years. Here is what that looked like on the day.

True Roots preparing a rear yard for advanced tree planting in Sydney
1. Site prep — position set from the landscape plan, services located, hole dug wide and shallow.
Steel planter ring with drainage set for an advanced tree, Sydney
2. Ring and drainage — steel planter ring set level, drainage laid so the root ball never sits in water.
Premium soil mix going into a tree planting hole, Sydney
3. Soil — premium planting mix blended into the site soil rather than a pot of good dirt in a bowl of clay.
Advanced Blueberry Ash root ball being planted by True Roots
4. The tree — 75 L Blueberry Ash (Elaeocarpus reticulatus), root ball teased, set with the flare at grade.
Advanced tree planted, staked and mulched to meet a council consent condition in Sydney
5. Planted — set at grade in its ring, mulched, watered in, and photographed for the consent file.

Handover — watering instructions left with the owner, completion documentation sent to the certifier.
Council conditions

When the council tells you to plant a tree.

Replacement planting after removal. Most Sydney councils that approve a tree removal attach a condition to plant a replacement, usually a native that reaches a stated height, in a stated container size, within a stated time. Georges River, Sutherland Shire, Bayside and City of Sydney all do this. Miss the condition and the removal approval can be treated as breached. We read the condition, supply the tree that meets it and plant it to the letter.

New builds and landscape plans. Development consents for houses, duplexes and granny flats carry a landscape plan with trees on it, and the occupation certificate is not issued until the certifier is satisfied they are in. We plant to the plan, at the specified container sizes, and give you a completion letter signed by a Level 5 arborist.

Stock standard. Conditions increasingly cite AS 2303:2018 Tree Stock for Landscape Use. We inspect every tree against it on delivery — root ball to trunk ratio, crown balance, no girdling roots, no trunk damage — and reject what does not pass, so the tree you pay for is the tree the condition asked for.

Transplanting. Moving an established tree is possible for small and recently planted trees and rarely worth it for anything mature: the root system that keeps a big tree alive is the part the excavator leaves behind. We will tell you honestly whether yours is a candidate, and if it is not, what to plant instead.

What it costs

Supply and install, priced as one line.

From about $3,350 ex GST

A 75 L advanced native, supplied, delivered, planted with premium mix and drainage, staked, tied, mulched and watered in — the size most council replacement conditions ask for. That is what our most recent one cost.

Bigger stock, more trees

100–400 L trees cost more to buy and need a machine to place; screening runs and landscape-plan plantings are priced per tree with the crew day shared across them. We quote the lot as one fixed figure.

With the removal

When we are already on site removing the tree the council made you replace, the replacement planting is priced as a line on the same quote and done the same day where the stock is available.

Documentation included

Photos of the planting, the nursery docket, the AS 2303 inspection and a completion letter from a Level 5 arborist, sent to you or straight to your certifier.

Tree planting questions

Good to know before you book.

What size tree should I plant?

For a council condition, whatever the condition says — usually 75 L minimum. For your own garden, 45–100 L is the sweet spot: big enough to look like a tree on day one, small enough to establish quickly. Very large stock is slower to settle and costs a lot more.

Which trees do you recommend for Sydney backyards?

Depends on the block. Blueberry Ash, Tuckeroo and Water Gum for medium shade trees near houses; Lilly Pilly and Ivory Curl for screening; Brush Box and Turpentine where there is room for a real tree. We steer people away from anything that will need removing in fifteen years. See our guide to the best native trees for Sydney.

When is the best time to plant?

Autumn and early spring — warm soil, mild air. Container-grown advanced trees can go in any month if they are watered properly, so a council deadline in January is not a problem.

Do you plant near powerlines, sewers or the house?

We locate services first and pick a species whose mature size suits the space. Where a tree has to go close to a slab or a pipe we fit a root barrier at planting, which is far cheaper than fitting one later.

What if the tree dies?

Council conditions usually require a failed replacement tree to be replaced within two years, so we plant to give it every chance: correct depth, drainage, mulch and staking, and watering instructions you can actually follow. Ask about establishment terms when we quote.

Can you move my existing tree?

Small and recently planted, yes. Mature, usually no — the odds are poor and the cost is high. We will look and tell you straight.
