Need a tree lopped? We make it smaller, safer and lighter — without wrecking it.
“Tree lopping” is what most of Sydney calls it when a tree has got too big, too close to the house, or too heavy over the yard. We are the crew people call for that job. What we actually do is reduction pruning to the Australian Standard: the tree comes down in height and spread to the size you want, it keeps its shape, and it regrows strong instead of sprouting a head of weak shoots. Same result you were after, done so the tree is still an asset in five years.
Why we will not simply lop it
The Australian Standard for pruning amenity trees, AS 4373-2007, puts it in one line in its foreword: “Lopping, topping and flush cutting are unacceptable practices.” The reason is biology, not red tape. Cutting a limb off at a random point leaves a stub the tree cannot seal. It decays inward, and the tree throws a crowd of fast, weakly attached shoots from the wound. Within a few years the tree is bigger than before and the new growth is the part most likely to fail in a storm. Councils know this, which is why a pruning permit on a protected tree is approved for work to AS 4373 and not for lopping.
Reduction pruning takes each branch back to a smaller side branch that can take over as the new tip. The tree ends up smaller, the cuts seal, and the regrowth is normal. From the street a well-reduced tree looks like it has not been touched — which is the point.
What we do instead of lopping
Height and crown reduction
The whole canopy brought down and in, to a size agreed before we start. The usual answer for a tree over the roof, blocking winter sun or shading the solar panels.
Clearance pruning
Branches cut back from the roof, gutters, pool fence, driveway or a neighbour’s boundary, to proper growth points so they do not race back.
Crown thinning and deadwood
Weight and sail taken out of a big gum the council will not let you remove. Dead and crossing wood out, light through, the tree kept.
Removal when that is the honest answer
Some trees are wrong for the spot and no amount of cutting fixes it. We tell you that, quote the removal and handle the council application if one is needed.
Lopping, pruning or removal — what you are actually asking for
| You say | What it usually means | What we do |
|---|---|---|
| “Lop the top off” | Tree is too tall | Height reduction to AS 4373, cutting back to side branches, not stubs |
| “Lop it back off the house” | Branches over the roof or gutters | Clearance pruning; often exempt from council permits when directly over the roof |
| “Lop it so it’s not so heavy” | Worried about limbs failing | Crown thinning, end-weight reduction and deadwood; sometimes cabling |
| “Lop it right down” | Wants it gone, or nearly | Removal, with the permit if the tree is protected; stump ground on the day |

Is tree lopping legal in Sydney? Permits, in plain terms
Pruning a protected tree is “clearing” under State planning rules once it goes past what your council allows. The NSW planning department’s own words: clearing includes “lopping or removing a substantial part of the vegetation beyond the amount of pruning that your local council allows”. How much your council allows varies a lot:
- Hornsby — “you can prune up to 10% of the leaf canopy (area)” where branches are a nuisance, once a year, to AS 4373.
- Inner West — without permission: canopy lifting to 2.5 m, branches under 100 mm to a maximum of 10% of the canopy a year, and deadwood.
- Ku-ring-gai — minor pruning is branches of 50 mm or less, branches directly over the roof line, and dead branches; trees within 3 m of the house are exempt (DCP Part 13).
- Georges River, Bayside, Canterbury-Bankstown — no percentage allowance. Deadwood, exempt species and small trees are exempt; pruning live branches on a protected tree needs a permit. Georges River exempts deadwood pruning only, done to AS 4373 (Tree Management Policy 2024).
- Sutherland Shire — branches directly overhanging the roof may be removed to AS 4373 without a permit; other work on trees with a trunk over 100 mm needs an application.
- Bushfire areas — in a 10/50 entitlement area the RFS says “you can prune any vegetation within 10 metres of the building”, to AS 4373. Check the online tool on the day and keep the result.
The permit itself is not the hard part — we lodge it for you. What a council will not approve is lopping. Our tree pruning page has the full council-by-council table, and our council guides go deeper on each area.
Trees near powerlines
Branches near the street powerlines are not a job for a lopper with a pole saw. Ausgrid says work near its lines must be done by workers accredited under the SafeWork code and that the “No Go Zone” is only for companies contracted to the network. Endeavour Energy asks owners to keep three metres clear of their lines. The private service line from the pole to your house is your responsibility, and that is work we do with authorised crews — see vegetation management.
What tree lopping costs in Sydney
Pruning, crown reduction and deadwooding to AS 4373 runs $800–$4,000 ex GST per tree. What moves it inside that band: the tree’s size and species, how much comes off, access for the chipper and EWP, whether there are powerlines or structures under the work, and whether a council permit has to be lodged first. More than one tree, an arborist impact assessment for a development, or a council application add to the total. You get one fixed price after we have seen the tree, no call-out fee.
A proper reduction costs more than a quick lop because it takes a climber longer to make the right cuts. It also means you are not paying again in three years to deal with the regrowth, and not paying for a removal when the lopped stubs rot.
How to tell a lopper from an arborist before you hire
Ask what standard they prune to
The answer is AS 4373-2007. If they have not heard of it, keep looking.
Ask for the qualification
The standard’s own definition of an arborist is AQF Level 3 in arboriculture or above. True Roots is run by an AQF Level 5 consulting arborist (Diploma of Arboriculture, TAFE NSW).
Ask about council
A real arborist tells you whether the work is exempt or needs a permit and lodges it. “Nobody checks” is the wrong answer.
Ask for insurance
Public liability and workers compensation certificates, current, in the company’s name. Ours are $20M public liability and icare workers comp, sent with every quote.
Tree lopping questions
What is tree lopping?
Cutting branches or the top of a tree off at a set point regardless of where the growth points are. It is the quickest way to make a tree smaller and the worst for the tree: the stubs decay and the tree regrows a dense head of weak shoots. AS 4373-2007 lists lopping and topping as unacceptable practices.
Is tree lopping illegal in NSW?
Lopping an unprotected tree on your own land is not a crime. Lopping a protected tree without a permit is unauthorised clearing under your council’s controls and the State vegetation rules, and councils do fine for it. Councils will not approve lopping on a permit; they approve pruning to AS 4373.
What is the difference between tree lopping and tree pruning?
Pruning makes cuts at growth points chosen for the tree’s structure, so the wound seals and regrowth is normal. Lopping cuts wherever the tape measure says. Both make the tree smaller on day one; only pruning keeps it that way.
Can you reduce the height of a tree without killing it?
Yes, within limits, and there is no fixed safe percentage. AS 4373 requires cuts back to live side branches and removing no more foliage than the tree can recover from; several Sydney councils cap permit-free pruning at 10% of the canopy a year, and larger reductions are staged over seasons and usually need a permit. Our arborist sets the limit for your tree and species.
Is lopping cheaper than removal?
Usually on the day, yes. Over a few years, often not: lopped trees need re-cutting as the regrowth comes back, and a lopped tree that rots has to be removed anyway. A proper reduction, or a removal where the tree is wrong for the spot, is the cheaper path.
Can I prune my neighbour’s tree where it overhangs my yard?
Generally you may cut back branches to the boundary at your own cost, but the cut still has to respect the tree and your council’s rules, and a neighbour can claim if the tree is harmed. Our neighbour tree rights guide covers it.
What time of year is best for lopping or pruning in Sydney?
Most pruning can be done year-round in Sydney. Deciduous trees are easiest to shape in winter when you can see the structure; avoid heavy cuts on stressed trees in the middle of a hot, dry summer; flowering trees are pruned after they flower. We tell you if timing matters for your species.
Do you lop palms?
Palms are not reduced — they cannot be. We remove dead fronds and seed pods and, where the palm is wrong for the spot, remove it. See palm tree removal.
