A big hardwood out through a side passage, without a crane.
A large hardwood in a rear yard on the North Shore, with the only way out a narrow side passage. Cranes are not always the answer: on this block a tracked loader that fits down the side of the house did the heavy lifting, and the tree came out in sections at a fraction of the fuss.
The problem
Big tree, small gate. Rear-yard removals on established Ku-ring-gai blocks usually fail on the same point: how to get heavy timber from the back of the property to the truck at the front without wrecking the paths, the garden or the neighbour’s patience.
How we did it
The climber dismantled the tree in sections sized for the loader rather than for a crane. Each section was cross-cut at ground level, and our Avant tracked loader carried the hardwood logs up the side passage to the truck. The chipper took the brush. The stump was ground below ground level so the area could be turfed or planted straight after.
Council
Ku-ring-gai protects any tree 5 metres or taller, or with a trunk of 150 mm or more at ground level, and dead or dangerous trees still need Council’s approval.
