Small job, done properly: tree out, roots out, bed ready to replant.
Inner-city tree work is mostly about what you cannot do: no machinery, no room, walls on every side. This Newtown garden bed had a tree whose roots were pushing against a rendered wall. The tree came out, and then the part most contractors skip — the roots — came out too.
The problem
Cutting a tree off at ground level leaves the roots to keep growing, heaving paving and pushing against walls for years. In a terrace garden the root mass is often the whole bed. Leaving it means the problem comes back.
How we did it
The tree was removed first, then the crew dug the bed out by hand to expose the root system against the wall, cut it out in pieces and carried everything through the house to the truck. The bed was cleared of root material and loose soil and left level, ready for new planting. No machine fits a Newtown terrace, so this is hand work, and we price it as such.
